How to create an Empowering Vision Board

Updated: May 9, 2021

I first started creating vision boards 8 years ago. I didn’t know they were called vision boards at the time. These goal-manifesting collages have become a powerful and helpful creative tool in transforming my dreams into action. And, they are fun to create.

What is a vision board? Simply put, a vision board is a physical collection of items such as pictures, magazine clippings, words, and quotes that visually affirm your goals and dreams.

A vision board is essentially a fancy name for a goal board or dream board that enacts the power of visualization. I have always been a firm believer in the power of goal setting and visualization. One way that I continue to set goals is by creating a vision board. With a few simple steps, you could have an inspiration board that looks amazing and helps you visualize your best life.

A vision board is a visualization tool of your biggest goals and dreams created with pictures, words, and other items, typically on a poster board. I love my vision board because it gives me a daily visual reminder to work hard towards my goals and dreams.

First, here’s the secret behind why a vision board works

In order to attract what you truly want, the vision board alone won’t cut it. You must see it, feel it, and embody it. To help you create the best vision board for getting clear on what you want, here are the four essential steps:

Step 1-Defining your goals

Step 2-Finding your inspiration

Step 3-Mapping out your board

Step 4-Bringing your board to life

Are vision boards effective? Vision boards are an effective way to reach your goals.

Vision boards work, and there is a straightforward explanation of why they work so well: the power of visualization. Visualizing your goals is a powerful tool that helps you set goals and shape your mindset to create your dream life.

Why Visualization Is So Powerful

Visualization is not about simply placing an image on a board to “manifest” what you want or just using “the law of attraction.”When you create a vision board and place it in a space where you see it often, you do short visualization & goal-setting exercises throughout the day. You may not even realize you’re doing it.

Seeing a constant visual reminder of your goals is how your subconscious mind stays focused on your goals. What you focus on expands. Creating a vision board gives you a visual way to see your goals and develop a mindset to reach them on a daily basis.

Planning Out Your Vision Board

The one major rule of creating a vision board is that there are no rules. This should be a fun and creative time for you to focus on your greatest ambitions. However, there are some common questions on how to make the best vision board.

What should I put on my vision board? Your board should include anything that inspires and motivates you. The purpose of your vision board is to bring everything on it to life.

First, think about what your goals are in the following areas:

  • Relationships

  • Career and finances

  • Home

  • Travel

  • Personal growth (including spirituality, social life, education)

  • Health

You don’t have to cover each area precisely the same; just take a mental inventory of what you want each of those areas to look like and write them down.

I have found that the secret to making a great vision board is by writing your goals down. There’s something energetic about actually handwriting your goals. From your goals and aspirations, think about what you want on your vision board.

Like I said before, what you focus on expands. You’ll be amazed at how things just start popping up all over the place once you set the intention for what you want and how you want to feel.

Tools To Create A Vision Board

Step 1: Go through your magazines and tear the images from them. No gluing yet! Just let yourself have lots of fun looking through magazines and pulling out pictures or words or headlines that strike your fancy. Have fun with it. Make a big pile of images and phrases and words.

Step 2: Go through the magazine cutouts and begin to lay your favorites on the board. Eliminate any images that no longer feel right. This step is where your intuition comes in. As you lay the pictures on the board, you’ll get a sense of how the board should be laid out. For instance, you might assign a theme to each corner of the board. Health, Job, Spirituality, Relationships, for instance. Or it may just be that the images want to go all over the place. Or you might want to fold the board into a book that tells a story.

Step 3: Glue everything onto the board. Add writing if you want. You can paint on it, or write words with markers.

Step 4: (optional, but powerful) Leave space in the very center of the vision board for a fantastic photo of yourself where you look radiant and happy. Paste yourself in the center of your board.

Step 5: Hang your vision board in a place where you will see it often.

Your board should include anything that inspires and motivates you. The purpose of your vision board is to bring everything on it to life.
